Most of you know I had to put my kitty to sleep 2 months ago. It absolutely broke my heart. She was around 13 years old, which is not that old for a cat. She had kidney disease though and became very sick very quickly. I am still so sad about her death.
The biggest problem I had though throughout her dying was that our usual vet Dr. Casey wanted to put her down without any member of our family present, and also without sedating her first. The idea of her last memory being being taken away from people who loved her to a Dr. she did not like, and then be held down against her will and injected with what can be a very painful medication, broke my heart. I could not make the decision to put her down knowing those would be circumstances.
My parents found another Veterinarian that assured us that she would sedate Lucy before injecting her with the medicine that would stop her heart. She assured us that she would not feel any pain and that someone could stay with her and hold her the whole time. I am so thankful for that.
Dr. Katherine,
Thank you for making my sweet kitten so comfortable during her last few minutes on earth. Thank you for taking the time to reassure us that she would not be in pain. Thank you for letting my dad sit in the room with her and hold her while you administered the medicine. Putting her to sleep was the most difficult decision I have ever made. I did not want her to ever suffer, so when I saw that she was beginning to I am glad there was a doctor with your compassion and care to help her. Thank you for doing the right thing when so many other doctors do not. You have an excellent bedside manner for the families of your patients and a kind heart. I am so appreciative of the way you treated Lucy. Thank you for doing difficult work so kindly.
Sincerely,
Mary Beth
